The impressive black-and-white images by Michael Dressel, who has made California his home, show a country and a society on the brink of collapse. A nation marked by extreme nationalism, political polarization, religious fanaticism, and gun obsession, coupled with paranoia, omnipresent poverty, and moral decay. His portraits are complemented by landscape photographs that speak their own somber language. “For me, the American landscape of the West shows the harshness and ruthlessness of the universe. For me, these places are just as telling of the state of this country as the looks on the faces of the people I meet. The people, society, and even the landscape simply feel worn out.” (Quote from Michael Dressel)
