When someone in the 21st century describes photographs as “painterly,” it can be read as an ironic remark, given that photography sought to supplant painting as the leading artistic medium in the 19th century. The photographs by Berlin-based artist Anna Lehmann-Brauns, however, manage—entirely without irony—to translate the painterly into a contemporary photographic language. Whether she’s photographing the Bosphorus from the window of a ferry in Istanbul, interiors of Berlin pubs, gay clubs in San Francisco, dusty storefronts of Charlottenburg flea markets, or homemade model rooms, her images always evoke an enigmatic, magical atmosphere that draws the viewer in and suggests associations with famous paintings. While many of her images resonate with wistfulness and melancholy, other brightly colored interior shots exude a masterfully cool elegance. The title of the exhibition and the book of the same name published by us, "Stages", refers to stages both literally and figuratively—as imagined stages of everyday life.
Anna Lehmann-Brauns
Anna Lehmann-Brauns (b. 1967) is a German artist who focuses particularly intensely on photographing interiors or constructing imaginary spaces in miniature. She studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig and was a master student of Joachim Brohm in 2001.
